Precious Sunday

Tell us something interesting about your role or Industry.

As a Third Engineer, I find my role incredibly rewarding, and not just because of the technical challenges it presents. As a female in a traditionally male-dominated field, I’m constantly motivated to shatter stereotypes and exceed expectations. Many people assume that women don’t have the physical and mental capacity to excel in this role. But with every voyage, I’m determined to prove them wrong. I’m not just a pretty face or a curved body, I’m a skilled engineer who gets the job done safely and efficiently. There’s a sense of accomplishment that comes with overcoming obstacles and defying expectations. When I successfully troubleshoot a complex problem or complete a difficult project, I feel an immense sense of pride and satisfaction. It’s a feeling that never gets old, and it’s what makes my role as a Third Engineer so interesting. I’m proud to be a woman in the shipping industry, paving the way for others to follow in my footsteps. I’m not just breaking glass ceilings, I’m setting new standards and redefining what’s possible. And that’s what makes my job so rewarding. I didn’t exactly choose engineering, but it’s a path that unexpectedly captured my heart. Growing up, I was never the typical problem-solver. Instead, my passions lay in fashion and music. I spent most of my free time designing clothes for myself as a teen, making music, and even singing to myself (though I must admit, those songs never made it past my bedroom door). However, my parents, being the education enthusiasts they are, encouraged me to focus on my studies. My mentor, a lecturer at the Maritime Academy [God rest his soul], introduced me to the maritime career and i choose engineering. At first, I was skeptical, but as I started exploring the field, I became fascinated by the way things worked, and the idea of seeing the world while making a living out of it. Initially, I approached engineering with a ‘trial basis’ mindset, but as time passed, I found myself falling deeply in love with it. The Academy became my second home, and the thrill of learning and knowing how these things really work consumed me. Now, I can’t imagine going back to my old passions, not because I don’t enjoy them anymore, but because engineering has stolen my heart. But I still do my passion in the walls of my room. It’s funny how life works out – sometimes the things we least expect to love become the very things that bring us the most joy. And for me, engineering is that unexpected love affair. As a assistant Third Engineer onboard, I am responsible for the maintenance and operation of the ship’s machinery and equipment. MY job details typically entail: Ensuring the condition and maintenance of auxiliary machineries and performing routine inspections and repairs on auxiliary machinery and equipment. Troubleshooting and resolving technical issues. Performing engine room watchkeeping [typically 8 hours a day] based on operational requirements. Performing duties as detailed in the chief engineers standing order. Inspection and maintenance of engine room fire fighting and life saving appliances including maintenance of lifeboat and rescue boat engines. Carrying out testing and dosing of boiler water system, cooling water system. Carrying out lubricating oil test to know the exact condition of the lubricating oil based on performance. Participating in drills and training exercises. Monitoring and maintaining sewage system ensuring compliance with MARPOL annex 4. Assisting the Chief Engineer and First Engineer in the overall management of the engine room. Monitoring and optimizing fuel consumption and performance. Ensuring compliance with safety protocols and regulations. Keeping accurate records and reports of machineries under my supervision. Reflecting on my career journey, I am filled with a sense of pride and accomplishment. From the moment I stepped into the Maritime Academy of Nigeria in Oron, I had big dreams and aspirations. However, my path to success was far from smooth. I faced numerous setbacks and rejections, which could have easily derailed my ambitions. Despite the discouragement, I persevered, and my determination paid off when I finally secured a cadetship placement. This was a milestone moment for me, and I was determined to make the most of it. My hard work and resilience led to another significant achievement: obtaining my Certificate of Competency. This was a testament to my dedication and commitment to my craft. But the crowning glory of my career so far has been landing a job as a Third Engineer. This role is a dream come true, and I am proud of the hard work and perseverance that have brought me to this point. While my achievements may seem modest to some, I know the struggles and challenges I overcame to get here. And that’s why I am so proud of myself. My career journey has been a remarkable one, and I look forward to many more accomplishments to come.
